Understanding The Course

In this section we will address and describe many important aspects of the golf course. Many new players have some very basic questions that they need answered. In this section we will shed some light on important aspects of the golf course that players must understand.

Tee box options

Most courses offer at least 3 tee box options. The tee box is where players begin each hole. It is important to play the most appropriate set of tees for your skill level. In the past, the courses would call the shortest set of tee boxes the ladies tee, the next set the men’s tee and the farthest set the championship tees. Courses have changed this approach and removed gender stigma to any tee box to allow players to play the more appropriate for their own personal abilities and skill level.

Yardage / Course marking

It is important to understand that most golf courses measure their yardages to the center of the green. Yardages are also measured from the geometric center of the fairways, not as the crow flies straight to the hole. This becomes important to build confident strategies how to better learn to play golf.

Pace of Play

Probably the most important rule to understand by all players who play golf. All players should have a goal to learn to play golf holes in 15 minutes or less. Sometimes flukes happen that slow a certain hole down such as

Lost balls, tough course set up or other unforeseen challenges. When this occurs, it’s important to work to get the group back on track to keep the pace of the golf course moving to help all players have an enjoyable experience.

Walk or Ride

This is a big question. How much distance is there between tee boxes on the course? How much is the course sloped? Some courses do not even allow walking because of severe golf course demands. Some courses allow a slight discount from the green fees if walking. It’s a good question to ask. Courses may allow walkers but the green fee remains the same, the price is built in to the overall course fees. If you walk you can carry your bag or maybe push a cart or trolley.
